Description
In Richmond County, North Carolina, the North Carolina Department of Transportation evaluated Stalite Lightweight Aggregate as a road surface treatment material alongside conventional aggregate. One lane was constructed using lightweight aggregate while the adjacent lane used traditional 78M aggregate for comparison.
The lightweight surface provided strong bonding with asphalt and allowed the roadway to be placed without the need for a blotting seal, eliminating an additional construction step. The darker color of the aggregate also gives the finished roadway a uniform appearance similar to plant mix asphalt while maintaining excellent skid resistance.
