Description
The Lord Delaware Bridge carries Route 33 over the Mattaponi River near West Point, Virginia, replacing older, obsolete structures with a modern long-span solution.
The 3,545-foot bridge incorporates 2,195 feet of lightweight high performance concrete (LWHPC) beams and deck. Prestressed concrete bulb-tee girders were cast using 8,000 psi structural lightweight concrete produced with Stalite Lightweight Aggregate, reducing dead load while maintaining high strength and durability.
The structure consists of three river-spanning units, including 145-foot spans and twin units with spans of 200, 240, 240, and 200 feet. The 70′-4″ wide deck was cast-in-place using 5,000 psi lightweight concrete specified at 110 pcf density.
This project demonstrates the efficiency and structural advantages of high-strength lightweight concrete in major bridge applications.
