Description
Hospice of Wake County in Raleigh implemented an innovative rainwater harvesting and stormwater treatment system designed to capture, filter, and reuse rainfall for landscape irrigation. The system features a 50,000-gallon underground cistern installed beneath the site’s permitted detention pond, allowing rainwater to be stored and reused rather than discharged as runoff.
The cistern is constructed using modular “rain tank” blocks capable of supporting H-20 vehicle loads. Above the tanks, a filtration layer made with Stalite Lightweight Aggregate recycled expanded slate fines is used as the stormwater treatment media.
This lightweight filtration layer allows stormwater to infiltrate and be treated at a rate higher than traditional bioretention media while maintaining proper soil conditions for vegetation. The system significantly reduces runoff volumes while conserving potable water by supplying irrigation for the hospice grounds and gardens.
