Description
The Hibernia Offshore Platform was constructed to support oil production in the harsh North Atlantic environment off the coast of Newfoundland. The gravity-based structure required extremely durable concrete capable of resisting severe marine exposure, ice loading, and long-term environmental forces.
High-strength structural lightweight concrete incorporating Stalite Lightweight Aggregate was used in portions of the massive concrete structure. By replacing a portion of the normal weight aggregate with lightweight aggregate, the density of the concrete was reduced while maintaining high compressive strength and durability. The lower density improved buoyancy during construction and float-out operations while maintaining the structural performance required for long-term offshore service.
The completed structure was constructed in dry dock, floated to deep water for continued construction, and ultimately towed to the Hibernia oil field where it was installed on the seabed.
