Description
Gateway Village in Charlotte features a rooftop garden and landscaped plaza constructed above service docks between two mid-rise office buildings. The design required a planting system capable of supporting lawns, shrubs, and trees while maintaining limited structural depth and minimizing additional weight on the structure.
To address these constraints, the project team selected Stalite Lightweight Aggregate as part of the engineered garden cross-section. The lightweight aggregate reduced structural dead load while providing adequate drainage and growing media support for the landscape installation.
Stalite aggregate was placed across the garden surface and into raised planters using a 60-foot telescoping conveyor, allowing installation within the constrained urban construction environment. The result is a landscaped urban courtyard that integrates vegetation, pedestrian space, and structural efficiency within a dense city setting.
